Tips and Hints
- If you plan to use your storage space more frequently or are going to be moving things in and out. It would be much more convenient to have a larger space rather then one which is packed to its full capacity.
- Have a system or plan when packing your storage space. Items which you need to access more frequently should be placed in the front of the storage area.
- Allow enough space to be able to manovoer around easily and for walkways inbetween boxes.
- When packing your boxes, place heaviest items on the bottom and lighter items on top. Also completely fill the boxes or secure open spaces with scrunched up newspaper or towels, do this to avoid damages
- Try to keep your boxes in uniform sizes. They are much easier to stack that way.
- It is always better to use good quality storage boxes. They will last longer and protect your valuables inside. We sell cardboard and other packaging material.
- It is a good idea to always check before hand what items are allowed in your storage facility. There are prohibited items that storage companies will NOT allow on their premises. Common sense and laws determine what may be stored.
- Labelling your boxes correctly can save you a lot of time and fustration when searching for specific items. Each box should be marked clearly and on two of the sides panels to allow for easy identification.
- Stand all ceramics, plates and saucers on their edge. Fill all pockets with some kind of packing material to avoid chips and damages. Make sure not to place heavy items on boxes containing easily breakable items.
- Fragile items such as glasses and kitchenware should be individually wrapped and placed near the top of well labeled boxes with the words "Fragile" or "This way up" easily visible.
- To save on time and space clothing and curtains can be stored on the hangers they were on in your cupboards originally. Just make sure to cover up and protect from undesired pests.
- Make sure all the goods you are putting away into storage are washed and clean. This makes for the unpacking process to be much more enjoyable. Food crumbs or stains should be removed before storage to avoid damage and storing of anything that may attract pests.
- Furniture with drawers can be utilised as storage places for china, silverware and small items. Wrap these up in tablecloths, towels or blankets to prevent breakage.
- Refrigerators and freezers should be cleaned and thoroughly dried before the time of storage, this is done to prevent dampness which could turn into rust and cause electrical faults later on. The doors to these units should remain slightly ajar to avoid fowl smells
- Larger appliances make excellent packing cases for blankets, towels, tablecloths and clothes.
- Stoves and cooking equipment are always to be cleaned before they are stored.
- Soft furnishings such as materials amd leather should have a protective layer or cover placed over the top.
- Rust tends to spreads over a period of time if your items are not protected correctly. To prevent rust on bicycles and other metal surfaces wipe all surfaces with the proper rust proof agent.
- To protect the spines of your favourite books make sure to pack them flat.
- If you plan on storing your mattresses standing upright be sure to prop it up correctly.
- Make up an inventory of all your stored items incase of loss or insurance purposes. Draw up a floor plan of your storage area to make things easier when you are searching for specific items. Store these two documents in a safe place at home
